About Place
Gola Gokarannath is located in the district of Lakhimpur-Kheri, Uttar Pradesh and is a tehsil. Famous for its numerous temples, amongst which Shiva Temple is on the top and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that during the era of Ramayana, Lord Shiva was moved by the penance of Ravan and let him have a wish. Ravana asked Shiva to come to Lanka with him and make that his final residence. Lord Shiva agreed but with a condition that he must place the Shiva Linga directly in Lanka without putting it down anywhere else.
But on his way to the Lanka, Ravana asked his shepherd to carry the linga so that he could empty himself. It was none other than Lord Ganesha who placed the Linga on the ground which is now turned into a shrine of Lord Shiva. After Ravana came back he couldn’t move the linga and that is how the linga got placed there permanently. Thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva visit the place every year.
